Coolest DIY Spider and Fly Child Costumes

If you’ve ever worked with faux fur than you know it gets EVERYWHERE! Hahaha I feel like we’ve been eating faux fur for sometime now, since making of these costumes! They were both made with LOTS of faux fur. I recycled a few fur throws to use the fabrics from (buying fabric by the yard is a bit pricey).

The fly costume for my 3 year old son was definitely easier, made of faux fur and the eyes are made from styrofoam balls. I just winged the antennas!

The spider costume for my 4 year old son is composed of a fur “body”-shirt (for everything to connect to), a spider butt, and the legs. I previously had a shirt pattern I used for the body. I created the spider butt with my own pattern and lots of fur, and the spider legs are pool noodles bent with duck tape. I made individual “sleeves” for each of the legs.

The legs are attached by zip ties around a piece of very sturdy cardboard. I then made straps with velcro to attach from the top and bottom of the spider legs, like a backpack for easy maneuvering. Paired both costumes with just plain black long sleeves and pants.

Last night we won in 2 categories in one of our local costume contests, “Best Costume Kids Division Elementary” and overall “Best of Show!” We were SO EXCITED and definitely up against some good competition!

Hard work pays off and memories were made!
