DIY Costume Inspired by 2023 Montgomery Riverboat Brawl
In honor of the Montgomery Riverboat Brawl, my costume for 2023 is “Sexy White Folding Chair.” While the brawl was an act of retaliatory and proportionate violence, it was even more so a demonstration of solidarity, justice, and eloquent rage. Everyone went home to their families with scrapes and bruises but lives intact – a rarity in the age of mass shootings and political violence.
Since the white folding chair subsequently turned into a symbol of resilience and self-defense, and Halloween is notorious for spawning costumes of absurdly “sexy” inanimate objects, I decided to combine those two trends into one ridiculous costume.
The costume consists of a white dress, a lace cardigan, glossy thigh-high stockings, pin-up doll fingerless gloves, white-folding-chair earrings, and the hanging “chair” portion–a kitchen cushion with buttons sewn on both sides and thick yarn looped around them and then up and behind my neck. The kitchen cushion is further attached to my dress with a white belt running through its hook-and-loop fastener straps. All in all, the materials cost me around $60.
On October 14th, I won a local costume contest for my town’s annual Queertober Ball – a night dedicated to the LGBTQ community with drag, burlesque, dancing, and camaraderie. The costume was so beloved that when I attended a book-signing for Mercury Stardust (the Trans Handy Ma’am) earlier this November, a couple of strangers SCREAMED when I told them that I was the “Sexy White Folding Chair” from the ball.
Apparently this costume has earned me a fan club. I hope that you all appreciate it as well!
