Dad as “The Large McDonalds Drink,” Mom as “The Happy Meal,” and Baby as “The Small Fry”
This year, our family’s Halloween costume idea was inspired by our 20-month-old daughter’s newfound obsession with French fries. After she tried McDonald’s French fries for the first time, she couldn’t get enough of them, and they quickly became her favorite food. With this inspiration, we decided to transform ourselves into a McDonald’s-themed family: Dad as “The Large McDonalds Drink,” Mom as “The Happy Meal,” and Baby as “The Small Fry.”
Creating our costumes was relatively easy and inexpensive. Most of the materials we used came from the Dollar Tree and Amazon (except for the box used for the Happy Meal).
Materials:
- Poster board: White, red, yellow, blue (Dollar Tree)
- Felt paper: Yellow, red (Amazon)
- Paint: Red and yellow (Dollar Tree)
- Two medium boxes (Walmart)
- Circular tray (Dollar Tree)
- Two-inch elastic for straps (Amazon)
- White hat (Amazon)
- White tutu leotard (Amazon)
- Red headband bow (Amazon)
- Black headband (Amazon)
- Red striped knee-high tube socks (Amazon)
- Red and white thigh-high socks (Amazon)
- White T-shirt (Dad’s closet)
- Red T-shirt (Mom’s closet)
- Miscellaneous materials: Pencil, eraser, scissors, hot glue gun, glue sticks, needle thread, paintbrushes (Dollar Tree)
Dad’s Costume: The Large Drink
- The Hat: Cut out white poster board to the desired height of the straw. Roll it into a straw shape and secure it with hot glue. Cut strips of red and yellow felt paper to create the straw design and glue them around the straw. Make folds on one side of the straw and attach it to the top of the hat using hot glue and thread.
- The Cup: Wrap white poster board around Dad to measure the size of the cup (we used two pieces attached together). Glue the poster board together to form the cup. Cut out red and yellow shapes to recreate the old McDonald’s cup designs and glue them onto the cup. Attach a yellow poster board to the top of the blue poster board. Draw out McDonald’s arches on the yellow poster board, cut them out, and offset them slightly to create a 3D effect. Glue the arches together and attach them to the cup. Secure the elastic straps to the inside of the cup using hot glue and thread.
Baby’s Costume: The Small Fry
- Cut out the shape of a McDonald’s fry container from red felt paper.
- Cut out French fry shapes from yellow felt paper and hot glue them peeking out of the fry container.
- Glue the fry container to the center of the leotard.
- Draw and cut out McDonald’s arches from yellow felt paper and glue them to the front of the fry container.
- Complete the costume with a red bow headband, red and white striped tube socks, and a cute baby!
Mom’s Costume: The Happy Meal
- Cut off all the flaps of the box.
- Paint the front and back of the box red using multiple coats, allowing each coat to dry completely.
- Draw and cut out McDonald’s arches with a base from the other box. Paint the arches yellow and apply multiple coats, allowing each coat to dry completely.
- Cut out two large smiles from yellow poster board and glue them to the front and back of the box.
- Hot glue the arches to the front of the box.
- Secure the elastic straps to the inside of the box using hot glue and thread.
- Cut out two arches with bases from yellow felt paper, glue them together (without gluing the bases), and attach them to a black headband.
- Complete the costume with a red T-shirt and thigh-high red and white striped socks.
Extra Accessory:
- Hot glue McDonald’s boxes, a fry container, and a bag to a circular tray.
We had a blast wearing our homemade costumes this Halloween. They were a hit with everyone, and our daughter especially loved her “Small Fry” costume. She couldn’t stop asking for French fries!
