Uplifting Ghostbusters Logo Costume for Cancer Patient

I was recently diagnosed with Cervical Cancer and while having many tests, a surgery and treatment meetings with radiation and chemo doctors, I was waiting for my chemo start date and trying to take my mind off what was one of the most terrifying times in my life. My mom and step-dad had come out to San Diego from Boston to help with my treatments and I was looking for fun activities we could do as a family.

I came across an event at The USS Midway Museum which is an aircraft carrier in San Diego harbor. The event was a Ghostbusters-themed Halloween party with a screening of the original Ghostbusters movie. I bought tickets for my husband and I, my two sons and my parents. I wanted to dress up but no one else in my family did. I was on my own and at the last minute I thought of a great costume idea of dressing up as the Ghostbusters logo. I had never seen it done and thought it would be a cheap, quick and easy costume that would catch peoples eyes and make them smile. It was a great way to cheer me up and distract me from my illness.

I went to the craft store and bought a white hooded sweatshirt, a large piece of foam core, red contact paper and white gloves. My husband helped me cut out the “no symbol” (we used a hula hoop to trace the circle) and I drew the ghost’s face which he attached with hot glue to a baseball cap that we took the brim off. I wore a white hooded sweatshirt and white gloves.

At the event many people dressed up and asked me for photos with them. People loved my Ghostbusters Logo costume and would sing “who ya gonna call ?” as I walked by. My kids loved the attention I was getting and helped me walk around as my vision was limited with the mask on.

I was so surprised when I was selected to participate in the costume contest and won!! It was decided by the audience noise level and it made me so happy to win. I had no idea there would be prizes but I ended up winning a 2 night stay at a local hotel. This is so wonderful because now I can have a relaxing hotel stay after my treatments are over to recuperate and celebrate. I was so grateful to everyone who cheered me on.

This Ghostbusters Logo costume brought me joy and a needed distraction from my current situation. It was a wonderful memory that my whole family will remember for a long time.
